EP Review: Bear’s Den – Agape

Agape is the second EP from Bear’s Den, a London-based trio who have supported a wealth of great live acts over their career so far. “Agape” is the Greek word for love, the theme that is carried on throughout the five-track EP.
First up is ‘Agape’ which opens with comforting sounds and heartfelt lyrics about being left alone while the love of your life is away, “I don’t want to know who I am, without you” is a lyric that stands out. It is a positive-sounding opener with the only give-away being the tender and emotive lyrics. Second track ‘Isaac’ is slow and soft in contrast, you can watch a live video that has been released for it below.
‘Mother’ serves as a reminder of the band’s label Communion and it’s roots, the bluesy vibes can definitely be likened to Mumford & Sons. It is of course Mumford & Sons that co-founder of Communion, Ben Lovett, is a vital member of. ‘When You Break’ again displays that they can do slow and lyric-focused songs well, the building sounds of the guitar are steady until the song’s conclusion is reached by singer Andrew Davie’s tender voice. The fifth and final track ‘A Year Ago Today’ is another good track, but feeling like something is missing just can’t be helped.
It was released last week and while the Agape EP is a progression from it’s predecessor and the lyrics and melodies do showcase the theme of love, Bear’s Den are missing something that I can’t quite put my finger on.
6/10
